Dan McLean is one of Canberra’s most highly acclaimed trumpet players and big band leaders, and we are thrilled to him head-lining Slowdown again in 2016. After completing the Bachelor of Music Honours degree majoring in Jazz at ANU under the guidance of Miroslav Bukovsky, Dan has well and truly established himself as a versatile trumpet player. Dan records, arranges and performs with numerous bands in Canberra, and is a regular performer at many of Australia’s Jazz Festivals. He is the proud band leader of ‘The Dan Mclean Big Band’—Canberra’s premier professional big band. Dan has performed with artists such as James Morrison, Grace Knight, Hetty Kate, Gordon Webster, The Platters, Bobby Arvon… and many more.

The band just love playing for dancers!
The band is excited and privileged to have the marvelous Hetty Kate on vocals singing with them. With her smooth, sweet tone reminding you of the greats of the 40’s and 50’s Hetty has become a favorite of the lindy hop and blues scenes. She regularly performs in Australia and abroad with the likes of James Morrison , Gorden Webster, The Pearly Shells Swing Orchestra, The B# Big Band and Daryl McKenzie’s Jazz Orchestra.
The fifteen piece band includes, Trumpets- Dan McLean, Miroslav Bukovsky, Ben Marston; Trombones- Valdis Thomann, Rob Lee, Rod Harding; Saxes- Dan Bray, Tom Fell, Andrew Hackwill, Adam Mathews, John Mackey; Piano- Damien Slingsby, Bass- James Luke, Guitar- Greg Stott, Drums-Mark Sutton.
Dan is excited to be performing with his big band, and talented vocalists Yvette Johansson and Georgia Brooks across the Slowdown weekend!
Yvette Johansson is an internationally renowned vocalist with a phenomenal range and a wildly charismatic stage presence. Taking her jazz inspiration from her idols Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, she is loved by blues dancers and lindy hoppers alike and absolutely brought the house down when she teamed up with Gordon Webster at Blues Before Sunrise.
Yvette was described by ABC Radio Melbourne as “truly virtuoso” and “able to channel Ella Fitzgerald like no other”.
Yvette’s vocal storytelling is heartbreakingly beautiful and completely captivating in it’s power and emotion. Lucky for us she is also an accomplished lindy hopper and blues dancer and she knows exactly how to keep a dance floor full and wanting more!
It is an honour and a privilege to welcome the immense talent of Yvette Johannsen to Slowdown. The pairing of her and Dan McLean will be pure magic.
Now a staple on the Melbourne jazz scene, vocalist Georgia Brooks has impressed audiences with her soulful ballads and lively upbeat swing. Whilst learning her operatic arias by day learning classical voice at at the Melbourne Con, Georgia became obsessed with the music of swing and jazz by night, learning to swing dance and becoming a prominent dancer, performer and teacher on the Melbourne swing dance scene. Finally, her two passions combined and Georgia began to sit in with bands around Melbourne and eventually started her own band (with drummer Sean Loughran) The Sentimental Gentleman and Georgia.
Georgia now plays regularly around Melbourne and Geelong, as well as appearing with her band at events such as Blues Before Sunrise, Melbourne Swing Festival, Slowdown 2015 and 2016, and Southern Blues.
